Following an unfortunate disqualification in Düsseldorf the last time around, Röttgen stud’s two-year-old Weichsel was able to break her maiden at Listed level in the Winterkönigin Trial at Cologne racetrack today. And she did so in promising style! The Soldier Hollow daughter shook off a bumpy start under her regular jockey Andreas Helfenbein and rolled past the opponents in the final two furlongs where she held off the strong late attack of Rose Sized to win by a nose.
Weichsel is a daughter of the champion two-year-old 1989 Well Known, dam of Group 1 winner Well Made and winner of Germany’s most prestigious race for two-year-old fillies, the Gr. 3 Preis der Winterkönigin. Next month at the Baden-Baden fall meet, Weichsel will have to prove whether she is able to follow into the footsteps of her great mother. We can’t wait!
